Automating the IFRS 17 Closing Process: From Four Days to One Hour

In 2025, one of our Taiwan clients acquired the Process Orchestrator (PO) license from FIS to streamline and automate its IFRS 17 financial closing process.

Working closely with an FIS PO technical consultant, we successfully implemented Process Orchestrator in both the development and production environments, helping the client establish an automated and controlled workflow for its actuarial closing activities.

The implementation covered the end-to-end definition of the IFRS 17 closing process, including the configuration of process functionalities and task templates for Data Conversion System (DCS), Prophet Enterprise (PE), PRD/IDR, SFTP file transfers, email notifications, and external programs executed through PowerShell.

We also automated the generation of the CSV files required by the PO process templates, eliminating the need for manual file preparation and handling.

The result was a significant improvement in operational efficiency: the actuarial team’s closing process was reduced from four days to just one hour. This achievement demonstrates how effective workflow orchestration and automation can transform financial reporting operations, reduce manual intervention, and strengthen process consistency and control.

    What is Process Orchestrator?

Process Orchestrator is an application within the FIS Insurance Risk Suite, designed to coordinate and automate workflows across the suite’s applications and modules, including:

    • Data Conversion System (DCS)
    • Assumption Manager (AM)
    • Enterprise Manager (PE)
    • SQL Connector (PRD)
    • Data Repository (IDR)

Process Orchestrator enables users to define reporting activities as a series of connected steps, with each step comprising one or more tasks. Each task is configured using a predefined task template, such as executing a DCS script, submitting a PE job, transferring files, or running an external program.

Processes can be initiated manually through the Process Orchestrator user interface or triggered automatically by placing appropriately configured parameter files in a designated location.

By connecting individual activities into a structured workflow, organizations can automate complex reporting processes, coordinate dependencies across systems, and establish consistent execution procedures.

    Key Functionalities
Process Orchestrator provides a range of task templates to support end-to-end automation across the Insurance Risk Suite, including:

    • Run a Data Conversion System script
    • Submit an Enterprise Manager job
    • Create and submit an Assumptions Manager job
    • Submit an Assumptions Manager job definition
    • Update an Assumptions Manager base set
    • Run SQL Connector
    • Run Data Repository
    • Transfer files
    • Record an approval
    • Initiate another Process Orchestrator process
    • Wait for an external system

These capabilities allow organizations to build workflows tailored to their reporting requirements.

For example, a process can begin by running DCS to generate model point files, followed by multiple PE jobs to calculate insurance liabilities and capital requirements. The resulting outputs can then be loaded into a reporting database and transferred to downstream systems, such as a general ledger.

Manual approval checkpoints can be incorporated at critical stages, while external systems can be integrated to execute additional activities or support decision-making.

In this way, Process Orchestrator acts as an electronic project manager for financial reporting, tracking what has happened, determining what should happen next, and coordinating the execution of each activity according to predefined rules and dependencies.

    Process Design, Control, and Governance

The Process Orchestrator user interface supports the creation, publication, export, and import of process definitions. It also provides role-based access controls to ensure that users can access and perform only the activities authorized for their roles.

    Typical responsibilities include:

    • End Users: Initiate authorized processes, monitor execution progress, and approve or reject processes at designated approval stages.
    • Model Developers: Design and maintain process definitions, publish workflows, and manage new versions.
    • Administrators: Assign Active Directory groups to roles and configure system settings, including folder paths, database names, and Prophet Enterprise domain names.

Process definitions can also be exported from one environment, such as testing, and imported into another, such as production. This supports controlled deployment and promotes consistency across environments.

Together, these capabilities provide a structured framework for workflow management, operational oversight, and process governance.

Knowledge Transfer and Technical Capability Building

We completed all key technical documentation and delivered customized training programs to enable clients’ internal teams to operate, maintain, and continuously enhance the IFRS 15 framework after project completion.

    Key Benefits of Process Orchestrator

    Increase Speed and Efficiency

Process Orchestrator automates repetitive tasks and coordinates activities across multiple systems, allowing reporting processes to run with minimal manual intervention.

By executing tasks according to predefined dependencies and distributing work across available systems and teams, organizations can reduce processing delays and accelerate financial reporting cycles.

Our Taiwan client’s implementation demonstrates the potential impact: reducing the actuarial closing process from four days to one hour.

    Extend Automation Across Systems

Process Orchestrator automates key Insurance Risk Suite activities and supports integration with external systems through interfaces such as REST APIs.

From data preparation and actuarial model execution to file transfers, notifications, and downstream reporting, organizations can connect previously separate activities into a coordinated workflow.

This reduces manual handoffs, simplifies operational procedures, and creates opportunities for further automation across the reporting lifecycle.

    Improve Quality and Governance

Automated workflows help reduce the risk of human error, missed tasks, and inconsistent execution by ensuring that activities follow predefined instructions and dependencies.

Real-time process monitoring provides visibility into execution status and helps teams identify issues promptly, reducing the likelihood of last-minute troubleshooting and rushed decisions.

Detailed process records and audit trails also support stronger governance, traceability, and operational risk management.

By reducing time spent on routine execution, actuarial professionals can focus more on reviewing results, investigating exceptions, and delivering meaningful business insights.

    Reduce Costs and Operational Risk

Process Orchestrator provides reusable task templates and workflow components that can accelerate implementation and reduce the effort required to automate reporting processes.

Organizations can build on these existing capabilities and configure workflows to suit their specific operational requirements, rather than developing every automation task from scratch.

Greater automation and improved process control can reduce manual workload, minimize operational risk, and enable organizations to make better use of their actuarial and IT resources.
